Boston Ballet presented the American Premiere of Michael Cordor's Cinderella a year after the English National Ballet world premiere in 1996. The work is the recipient of both the Evening Standard Award (1997) and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Dance Production (1997). Having performed in Ashton's Cinderella with The Royal Ballet in London, Cordor was intimately familiar with the typically British retellings of the beloved fairytale, with pumpkins, mice, and comically mean spirited stepsisters (often played by men). However Cordor's new production, more closely adapted from Boris Volkov's Russian Cinderella with its attractive but cruel stepsisters, owes much to the spirit of ancient Cinderella folk legend, than to British pantomime tradition. |
