Ron Cunningham's Cinderella is based in the British ballet retelling of the Charles Perrault fairytale, with "ugly stepsisters" played by male dancers. Cunningham's work was created for Boston Ballet and debuted in 1976. The production toured with the company to China in 1980 and received a rare standing ovation from Chinese audiences. In addition to the role of the Fairy Godmother, Cunningham's version included a Guardian of the Hours, and Clock Dwarves, who caution Cinderella against staying too long at the ball. |
