May 22 - June 1, 2014
George Balanchine's © renown tour-de-force Jewels makes its Boston Opera House debut. Jewels is a vibrant and elegant evening featuring Emeralds, set to music by Gabriel Fauré; Rubies with music by Igor Stravinsky, and Diamonds set to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3.
Last presented by Boston Ballet in 2009, Jewels remains a brilliant overview of ballet history and style, evoking three cities - Paris, New York, and St. Petersburg - each a place which figured prominently in Balanchine's career. Each piece uniquely encapsulates the complex history of classical dance through the opulence of 19th century France, the imperial style of Russia, and Balanchine's own neoclassical take on the art form.
