With more layering than any other full-length ballet and greater detail, "The Sleeping Beauty" creates a world of characters, history, vignettes, fragrance. The innumerable threads of its vast tapestry include many petty details that Tchaikovsky's music makes far from petty, like the women who knit, eagerly but belatedly, for Princess Aurora's birthday. Or the game of blind man's bluff among hunting aristocrats. Or the farandole that links peasants to those aristocrats in a single chain.
