1. How do I know which level is appropriate for me?
Boston Ballet School offers four levels of technique for this upcoming summer to suit all levels and abilities:
Beginner – designed for students who regularly take a Beginner level class or those who have no previous ballet experience. Students will be introduced to the basic arm and leg positions, the concept of turnout and developing coordination through simple exercises at the barre and in the centre.
Elementary – designed for students who have had at least 1-3 years of prior ballet experience. Barre work includes balances in all positions, turning, and port de bras. Centre work includes the use of the body directions in combinations, pirouettes, and the beginnings of grand allegro (large, traveling jumps).
Intermediate – designed for students with a complete knowledge of barre and centre work. Classes will include more complex combinations of steps as well as petit and grand allegro and batterie.
Advanced – designed for students who are either professional or former professional dancers, or are currently studying at a professional school or college. This is the highest level of training offered at Boston Ballet School.
2. What should I do on the first day?
There will be a welcome meeting for all students at 6:30pm on Monday August 4th. We will share our stories of what brought us to dance, meet the faculty and find out more about the program. There will still be enrichment classes held at 5:30pm this first day.
Locker rooms for both men and women are available; students are permitted to bring in locks for day use only. It is strongly encouraged that students do not leave valuables unattended. Should you have additional questions, such as which studio you should report to, a studio administrator will be available at the front desk.
3. What should I wear?
The only traditional ballet attire we require of our adult students is soft ballet slippers. Otherwise, students should wear comfortable clothing that makes them feel at ease, from leotard and tights to sweats, leggings, t-shirts. Whatever you choose to wear, we ask that it be form fitted, stretchy, allow for freedom of movement and if you have long hair, please pull it back from the face.
4.What is included as part of the core program?
For information about the program details per level, please go back to the "Details" tab and click on each level.
5. What are the enrichment classes?
Enrichments will be in Pilates and Modern dance technique.
6. What is Modern dance?
Modern dance uses some of the same technique found in ballet such as turn out, precise leg work, jumps and turns, while also incorporating expanded floor work, parallel positions, flexed feet, twist and tilting of the body, the use of gravity, fall and recovery, and the concept of contract-release of energy. Combinations in the center and traveling steps across the floor use different qualities of movement and muscular force such as strong, sharp and direct or soft, light and floating.
7. What happens at the end of the program?
On the last day of ASDP, students will have the opportunity to share work they have been learning in the variations and repertoire with other students. Friends and family are invited to this informal presentation and there will be a reception afterwards to wrap up the two weeks.
8. My summer plans have changed. How do I withdraw from ASDP?
Please contact the Office of Administration immediately at 617.456.6333. Tuition for ASDP is refundable until May 31, 2014 (less fees and a $50 withdrawal fee). Tuition is non-refundable except in cases of illness or injury as documented by a physician after May 31, 2014.
